在干潔的大氣中，痕量氣體的組成是微不足道的。但是在一定范圍的大氣中，出現了原來沒有的微量物質，其數量和持續時間，都有可能對人、動物、植物及物品、材料產生不利影響和危害。當大氣中污染物質的濃度達到有害程度，以至破壞生態系統和人類正常生存和發展的條件，對人或物造成危害的現象叫做空氣污染，也可叫大氣污染。造成空氣污染的原因，既有自然因素又有人為因素，尤其是人為因素，如工業廢氣、燃燒、汽車尾氣和核爆炸等。隨著人類經濟活動和生產的迅速發展，在大量消耗能源的同時，同時也將大量的廢氣、煙塵物質排入大氣，嚴重影響了大氣環境的質量，特別是在人口稠密的城市和工業區域。所謂干潔空氣是指在自然狀態下的大氣空氣污染（由混合氣體、水氣和雜質組成）除去水氣和雜質的空氣，其主要成分是氮氣，占78.09%；氧氣，占20.94%；氬，占0.93%；其它各種含量不到0.1%的微量氣體（如氖、氦、二氧化碳、氪）。
